The Annunciation of the Transatlantic Black Woman

The Annunciation of the Transatlantic Black Woman

Tijera S. Williams, "The Annunciation of the Transatlantic Black Woman", 2020, 48" x 60" Acrylic on Canvas

"The Annunciation of the Transatlantic Black Woman" is a self-portrait painting. Created as my first painting of 2020, this painting symbolizes my experiences and struggles as a Black woman who knows of her heritage as a true descendant from Africans who were stolen from their homelands and enslaved to work in the Americas and around the world. This piece shows a Black woman warrior, who has denounced her forced nation and erupted from the sea onto a familiar yet new land, with the power of Oshun and Yemaya radiating from her. She has taken on the responsibility to fight for her people who she loves but is still blinded with vulnerability and uncertainty as her land is slowly being approached by the enslavers. This piece was created to uplift and storm the brigades on any insecurities that have been placed on Black women. She is here to be a wake-up call to inequities and announce that she has arrived.

The Birth of the Black Woman

The Birth of the Black Woman

Tijera S. Williams, The Birth of the Black Woman Statement, 2019, 60 x 40 in, Digital Photo Collage

Description: To continue the pursuit and story of my life as it connects to the Black experience and a merging with my hybridized themes, I created "The Birth of the Black Woman". This image, of course, is a nod to Sandro Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus" fresco, which depicts the goddess Venus arriving at the shore after her birth, when she had emerged from the sea fully-grown. This image is infamous to connect to an arrival, christening, and anointing of innocence, love, and femininity.

As a Black woman historically, growing up too fast is something that has happened because of stereotypes. Black women can not always be seen as young and innocent, due to the racially heated social status that we exist in. "The Birth of the Black Woman" was made to be an oozing confident call to all women, with self-loving and accepted bodies in tow, denouncing to never be covered up by haters, culture vultures, or even by our own self-inequities. This bright, love letter to a Los Angeles Black queen is a piece to myself and all women to know they are queens. It commands power and has a historical context to Santorian god Shango and goddesses Yemaya and Oshun.

"The Seven Sins and Virtue Facing Judgement"

"The Seven Sins and Virtue Facing Judgement"

Tijera S. Williams, "The Seven Sins and Virtue Facing Judgement", 2018, 30' x 40', Digital Photo Collage

In a play-on with the parable, I wondered, "When I die, who will speak for me before I will be decided to spend eternity in Heaven or in Hell?"

The idea dawned to dig even deeper and reflect on the storyline as if my representative for myself would be outnumbered, considering that in Christian belief that we are all born sinners. The Seven Sins of Pride, Wrath, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, and Sloth would sit at the table to be witnesses to my life and showcase how I possessed them in various balances in front of a Judge (who is the viewer). The sole representative for all my good behavior would be a sole Virtue, as a way to contradict and scrutinize against my belief that in this world we are innocent until proven guilty. By allowing the viewer to be the Judge, I also excise the fact that Black people but specifically Black women overall are immediately judged in numerous ways based on which characteristic sin they possess. Whether they are deemed "too sexual" and forever casted hyper-sexually or stuffed into the "Angry Black woman" trope amongst the other Deadly sins, "The Seven Sins and Virtue Facing Judgment" allows for the viewer to decide what they want to see, who they want to believe, and which side of judgment receives the final call.

This represents Oakland to me and the diversity of Blackness. There are no wrong ways to be a black woman in this world. We are all worthy of love, respect, kindness, and the opportunity to express ourselves freely.

I find comfort in our collective presence.
